Hi

I spoke to you yesterday about when we can return my wife to Norway. I was told that, based on the most recent MRI´s taken on July 10th, your assessment was that travel back to Norway was still considered a risk, and that you would like to have another MRI done in two weeks. Our understanding is that the MRI taken on Jul 10th did not show any change from earlier images.

I find it difficult to understand your assessment of this situation. I have spoken to two neurosurgeons, Dr. Baskin and Dr. Mayer, both of whom have told me -- independently -- that given the type of bleed in question, travel is not an issue and it does not pose substantial risk. Dr. Basking at Morristown Memorial Hospital told me this two weeks ago, and yesterday I spoke to Professor Stephan Mayer, M.D., Professor of Clinical Neurology and Neurological Surgery Critical Care Neurology, Division Head at Columbia Presbyterian, probably one of America´s top experts in this field who has looked at the images taken at Morristown Memorial (but not the last MRI which I will send him today).

As I am sure you can appreciate, the stress associated with having two young children (who flew back to Norway on Jul 13) back home and a wife with a stroke is quite overwhelming. The rehabilitation center has -- based on a phone conversation with my wife, and without consulting me, terminated all activities as of this coming Thursday, leaving A without any training at this very critical moment in her path to recovery. Not only is the situation stressful for us, but it is also starting to tax the people here in New Jersey whose hospitality we have now been relying on since June 23rd and my wife´s parents who have been looking after our children for close to a month.

Given that there seems to be diverging opinions on this matter, it would be useful for us to fully understand the basis for your risk assessment. Could you please provide me with the following:
  1. A written assessment from your doctor giving us the reasoning behind your decision to leave us here in NJ for another two weeks waiting for another MRI. I would like to know spesificially whether your doctor has actually seen the MRI in question or if they have relied on a local MD for advice. If the latter is the case, I would like to know which doctor you have spoken to and whether this doctor is a neurologist.
  2. What it would take for you to change your risk assessment regarding travel.
As it is difficult for me to fully understand these issues on the phone, and given the the SOS person we talk to often does not know the case in detail, it would be useful if the assessment is provided in writing by the doctor who made the decision.

Having said all this, I also want you to know that overall, I think you have done a good job so far. The Care Managers at both institutions are quite impressed with your willingness to solve problems. That is highly appreciated.

Sincerely

C
